Fine handcoloured copy of the printed edition of the Tabula Peutingeriana, the renown road map of the Roman Empire. The original Roman map, attributed to Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, has not survived. The map was acquired by the humanist Konrad Peutinger and published by Ortelius in 1598 on four large sheets. It depicts the entire Roman road system from the Atlantic to the Near East, including cities, rivers, mountains, and postal stations, in an elongated and schematic representation typical of itinerarium maps. The map bears witness to the transmission of ancient cartography and its Renaissance revival, making it of exceptional historical and cartographic interest.

Buona copia colorata a mano all’epoca dell’edizione a stampa della Tabula Peutingeriana, la celebre mappa viaria dell’Impero Romano. L’originale romano, attribuito a Marco Vipsanio Agrippa, non è sopravvissuto. La mappa fu acquisita dall’umanista Konrad Peutinger e pubblicata da Ortelius nel 1598 su quattro grandi fogli. E’ illustrato l’intero sistema stradale romano dall’Atlantico al Vicino Oriente, con città, fiumi, rilievi e stazioni di posta, in una rappresentazione allungata e schematica tipica della funzione itineraria. La carta testimonia la trasmissione della cartografia antica e il suo recupero nel Rinascimento, risultando di eccezionale interesse storico e cartografico. 4 fogli, (427 x 538mm). Incisione in rame su più fogli in elegante coloritura coeva, al verso testo latino (strapetti, lievi bruniture perlopiù marginali, pighe al centro).
