In 8vo grande, 12 ff, 343 pp, (1b.); engraved coat of arms of a member of the van Bronckhorst-Batenburg family on title, woodcut large initials and 15 copper plates, contemporary gilt panelled vellum with central lozenge shaped ornament on both covers surrounded by decorated gilt ornamented panel, single gilt fillet line around sides, gilt spine, gilt edges. From the library of the Archbishop of Cologne Ferdinand of Bavaria (?) with his (?) contemporary owner’s entry on title (“Biblioth. Arch. Ferdinandi & r”); yellowed; hinges broken but holding strongly on cords. Vellum slightly warped.

 

Comments:

Second enlarged edition of an illustrated work on military architecture, equipment and weaponry (1st edition with 5 plates and without last chapter). Flaminio della Croce had fought in the Low Countries under the command of Alessandro Farnese, Duke of Parma. The 15 engravings depict fortifications and other defensive structures as well as ballistic weaponry.
